The chapter was formed in 1925 by a group of avocational archaeologists. Founding members included Charles Goddard, Nathaniel Booth, Bennett DeBexeidon, Roy Latham, Elliott Brooks, Edward Vail, James Gildersleeve, William Griswold, and Daniel Young.
In 1932 the chapter was formally recognized by its parent organization, the New York State Archaeological Association.
In 1943 the chapter was incorporated as a non-
In 1962, with money left to the organization by one of its founders, Charles Goddard, the chapter built the Indian Museum which today houses the bulk of the archaeological collections of Mr. Latham, Mr. Booth, and Mr. Goddard.
The Southold Indian Museum owns the Algonquin Flint Mines at Coxsackie, New York. This is one of the few sites of its kind left in safe hands. The site is over sixty three acres in size and contains many of the quarries used by the American Indian. Paleo hunters used this area as a source of flint over seven thousand years ago.
The museum obtained this site from its owners with funding donated by Mr. Frank Husing, a member of Southold Indian Museum in 1960. Through the efforts of Ms. Mable P. Smith, Flint Mine Hill was put on the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1978.
We thank you for your interest in the museum. We try to encourage community involvement through educational offerings to schools, clubs, associations, and family groups.
Our educational programs are among the best in terms of flexibility toward visitor interest and need; linking the artifact collections we maintain and protect, with the living culture of Native Americans.
We have established a children s area that is full of puzzles, books, and other activities. There are story booklets that can be acted out with puppets and other props.
We continue work at refreshing the exhibits so that there are always new things to explore and learn.
As you can see, we do keep busy and try to keep up with our mission of education. As with other small museums, we are faced with serious financial challenges at this time. So far we have been able to be open throughout the year and enjoy being able to share the collections with our visitors.
Our members remain a vital part of our ability to continue with our mission. We are a volunteer driven, not for profit organization. Your support through membership is a valued gift to the community. Please consider joining us in the journey.
