As part of our mission of preservation and education, we are introducing our Center for Traditional Crafts. The center offers a year-round series of classes covering many craft traditions, taught by our experienced Museum staff and other teachers from the community.

Botanical Printing for the Holidays

November 12; 1:00 to 4:30 PM

Take the beauty of nature and learn how to transform it into very personal and original gifts for the holidays. We will use a home-made press and the pressure of our hands and, taking plants, leaves, flowers and even seaweed, learn how to apply paint so that we get a dramatic transfer of nature onto paper, tee-shirts and note cards, If you wish to do tee-shirts you must bring your own, light colored cotton tee-shirts.

Fee: $30, $25 members; Materials fee: $12 includes 10 note cards.

Dream-catcher Making

Learn this Native American craft that can be used to create  beautiful accessories.  Put together and string your own loom to take home.  Also, crate a seven-bead-wide weaving design to make a bracelet that will be attached to leather and “finished off”. Teacher:Martha Waide ; 12 years to adult

Fee:$18 (15 for members); Materials Fee:$5

A three -week course designed to teach the basic knitting stitches (cast on, knit, purl, bind off), give practice in maintaining the correct tension and familiarize students with the basic tools and yarn types.  Project will be one of two different scarves.  Teacher:  Ellen Barcel ; teen to adult

Fee: $35 ($30 for members) plus $15 materials fee (or #8 knitting needles and knitting worsted yarn).

Your American Girl Doll (or other 18 inch doll) will love the hand-made outfit you make for her in this class - and you will learn the basics of hand sewing in the process. Teacher: Maureen Shea,  Grade3 and up

Fee: $16 ($14 for members) all materials included

Make your very own sweat jacket with pockets.  Learn some machine and hand sewing and basic quilting techniques.  Bring a solid color, comfy-sized crew neck sweatshirt and ¼ yard of cotton print fabric to coordinate.  Teacher: Maureen Shea,  Ages 11 to 14

Fee: $22 ($18 for members); Sewing machines provided.  Limited class size.

Learn the Native American story of the Dream Catcher and make one of your own to keep the bad dreams away.  Lisa Stevenson ; Elementary to Jr.High level

Fee: $10 ($8 for members), materials included.
